BRIEF

Cover design for a special 50th anniversary one-volume edition of The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. My goal was to create something worthy of the milestone, a design that honors the depth of the source material while feeling fresh and collectible for both longtime fans and a younger readership discovering the series for the first time.

WHAT I DID

I approached the cover through restraint rather than spectacle. Instead of depicting iconic scenes directly, I paired a warm, earthy palette rooted in the tones of Middle-earth with minimalist illustrations that distill the world's essence into a symbolic language. For the title, I designed a custom typeface of my own and treated it as an architectural element to carry the weight the edition demanded

RESULT

With this, the design aims to strike a balance between reverence and reinvention, familiar enough to resonate with dedicated fans, yet distinct enough to stand apart from existing editions. My intention was to give the cover a collector's quality without relying on nostalgia alone, letting its restraint communicate the scale of the story it represents.
