Cover design for Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King — King's first hard-boiled detective novel and a departure from his signature horror territory into psychological thriller. The challenge was to capture the novel's cold, predatory atmosphere and the central role of the Mercedes as both weapon and symbol, without relying on conventional thriller cover tropes.

WHAT I DID

Placed the Mercedes at the visual center of the composition, treating it not merely as a plot element but as a symbol of menace and calculated violence. A dark, oppressive tone was established through the color palette, reflecting the novel's psychological weight and the cat-and-mouse tension between a retired detective and a psychopathic killer. The typographic treatment was designed to feel deliberate and cold — echoing the controlled, unsettling nature of Brady Hartsfield himself.

RESULT

The design distilled the novel's core threat into a single, unambiguous visual — the car as predator rather than status symbol. The dark palette and compositional tension communicated the psychological thriller register clearly, differentiating the cover from King's horror catalog while remaining unmistakably his territory. The project demonstrated how a single iconic object, reframed through context and tone, can carry an entire narrative's weight.
