BRIEF
In this book, King's first crime novel in which he transitioned from horror to psychological thriller, my aim was to capture the cold, predatory atmosphere of the novel and the central role of the Mercedes, both a weapon and a symbol, without resorting to the usual thriller cover clichés.
WHAT I DID
I placed the Mercedes at the visual center of the composition, treating it not merely as a plot element but as a symbol of menace and calculated violence. I built a dark, oppressive tone through the palette, reflecting the novel's psychological weight and the cat-and-mouse tension between a retired detective and a psychopathic killer. I shaped the title typography to feel deliberate, cold, and controlled. Echoing the unsettling nature of Brady Hartsfield himself.
RESULT
With this, the design aims to distill the novel's core threat into a single, unambiguous visual: the car as predator rather than status symbol. Through the dark palette and compositional tension, my intention was to communicate the novel's psychological thriller tone clearly. Setting the cover apart from King's horror catalog while keeping it unmistakably his territory.
